Types of Boat Towing Coverage
Before you can enjoy that beautiful day out on the lake, you need to make sure you get your boat there safely first. If you have to tow your boat, you need to make sure you have proper boat towing coverage.
Is towing coverage included in a boat insurance policy?
An advantage to having a separate boat insurance policy is that towing coverage is often included. Towing covers the expense of dead batteries or running out of fuel, which can cost $300-$400 minimum. Not to mention if you are having engine trouble and need a longer tow, the prices only go up.
How do I know what type of towing coverage to get?
It’s a good idea to have both types of coverage on your boat insurance policy. Salvage losses can often be confused with towing losses. If your boat runs aground and is determined to be a salvage claim, it won’t be covered under towing insurance.
Towing – Covers minor incidents like running out of gas or engine trouble that cause the boat to need to be towed to shore. Towing is usually charged by the hour.
Salvage – Covers major incidents like when your boat must be rescued or salvaged from the water, including running aground or sinking. Salvage claims are far more expensive than towing.
How do I know how much boat towing coverage I need?
Towing coverage limits should be determined by where you do most of your boating. If you do most of your boating close to port, you might not need as much coverage. If you travel greater distances with your boat, you should increase your limits significantly to account for those longer tows.
Do I have to pay for towing losses upfront?
Be sure to ask your carrier how they handle towing losses. Some carriers will provide 800 numbers to towing companies within their network so you can simply “Sign and go.” Others allow you to use whichever towing company you prefer, and they will reimburse you for towing losses afterward.
